Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): A Key Enabler for Renewable Energy and Industrial Decarbonisation
The growth of renewable energy brings with it a new challenge: intermittency. Solar and wind are not always available, making it harder to ensure a stable energy supply. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are critical in solving this problem, allowing us to store energy when production is high and use it when demand peaks.
The Role of BESS in Europe’s Energy Strategy
As outlined by BBVA and international sustainability agencies, the EU plans to triple its storage capacity by 2030 to support its transition to renewable energy. BESS will help stabilise national grids and reduce dependence on fossil fuels—especially in industrial environments where reliability is non-negotiable.
Why BESS Matters for Industry
For industries like Alier, energy storage represents a way to improve operational resilience while contributing to decarbonisation. Though we have not yet implemented BESS at our facilities, we are investing in renewable energy infrastructure, including:
- A biomass plant to reduce direct emissions by up to 97% (Scope 1)
- A photovoltaic plant to reduce indirect CO₂ emissions by 30% (Scope 2)
BESS would complement these efforts by enabling greater self-consumption and stability in the long term.
How Alier Sees the Future of BESS
As Alier grows and expands into new markets, BESS could play a strategic role in supporting energy autonomy at international sites. These systems may help us reduce peak demand costs, optimise clean energy use, and ensure consistency across diverse operational contexts.
A Vision of Renewable Industry
BESS are not just batteries, they are an essential part of the infrastructure for a cleaner future. At Alier, we believe that energy solutions must match industrial needs while supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. We will continue exploring how technologies like BESS can reinforce our sustainability mission.
